Moments of thought-provoking, yet heart-warming cinematic expression - that's what Talaash is. Occasionally banal, perhaps, but never boring. Narrative idea is fine. We get it, you know; childhood fantasy, life initiation, you know the drill. But it's the "story" itself that's so refreshing, so cinematic - and Reema Kagti's direction makes that tale come alive in a way that many a film student would deem impossible.
It's good to see that in a film that tries so hard not to be a clichéd tale, the screenplay comes out so original, so compelling that the stereotypical elements are played off to perfection. And that's what makes Talaash quite unique, in my opinion.
This movie is really well made. Reema Kagti has captured the main thing in this film. Wonderfully shot and directed the story is quite captivating. Aamir, his sister, and co-writer Zoya Akhtar make the most interesting characters in the film. All the actors really did an amazing job. Malhar Joshi really sets the good tone, his character is really interesting and unique. I really loved the intro song. The movie was pretty pleasing and exciting. But that being said, it could've been just a little bit longer. The film needs a longer running time. This way it's more lively. The pace of the film can get pretty monotonous sometimes. I give it a 4/5.
Speaking of the treatment at hand, I am afraid that the film has some way to go before its treatment is up to the mark. You'll find plenty of flaws in the story, script and filmmaking. It took me a few minutes to realize why it wasn't working well for me; considering the unbelievable situations, I think the drama ends up poorly. For one, the pacing of the film is lousy. I had no idea what was going on. The scenes that were supposed to be suspenseful didn't work. The film seems to be swinging from scene to scene. Wherever it is going, it doesn't seem to know what it is doing. There isn't much tension at times. I've just had a few failed attempts. But if it's what the director had in mind, I could be making a fool of myself.The performances of the cast aren't bad at all. (Are you kidding? I'm surprised the cast was able to keep their sanity). But the film's missing a point. Are they just acting or are they trying to act? I have my own personal reason why the performances were lacking - the film was written to be a cult classic. And it isn't! It's lacking action, suspense, drama and storytelling. To be honest, the film's only made me go "WOW! Nice one" in one or two places. Don't get me wrong, the film is interesting on one hand, but it needs a few more moments to make its experience worthwhile.Reema Kagti's 'Talaash' won't make you weep, but it will certainly make you cringe!Technically, 'Talaash' is near flawless.
