Significance: Erosive arthritis of the hip (RAO) refers to articular bone loss. Inflammation of the muscle, tendon, or other tissues may be present, but not explained by progression of underlying skeletal pathology. The etiology of RAO remains unknown, but thyroid disease and peripheral neuropathies are common. Recent literature on RAO indicates that the underlying pathogenesis is different than in RA.
