the visual effects (vfx) for dunkirk were put together in a variety of ways, but the goal was to make every shot look like it came from a real ocean, a real beach, and a real beach on a real boat. we had control over the weather, we had control over the position of the sun, we had control over the waves to make sure they looked like a real boat in the water and we had control over everything on the beach. so we could do it at realistic temperatures and incorporate water into the shots.
since the film is based in england, part of the challenge was to capture and control the weather in all kinds of places. we have a very large team of optical effects and shooting technicians. a lot of it was about the weather and getting the right amount of rain at the right time, and different times of day in the different locations.
then we had to go back into the edit and make everything look real, and make the whole thing move. so we went back and took the footage that we shot and resimulated it at a different speed. we set the parameters of the sun, we set the speed of the waves, and we were able to create conditions that felt like they were actually happening on the beach. then the water put in front of the lens we had an imax camera which was an amazingly versatile way to get shots.
to create a realistic effect, we used two imax cameras, one inside and one outside the boat. we did that so we could control the depth of field and the exposure to match what you would see through the water. we needed to match the depth of field in front of the boat and behind the boat. so we had several cameras to match the lenses of the 70mm imax in dunkirk. d8a7b2ff72
