students who are told what they know or have to do by rote do not grow. in my classroom, i try to provide opportunities for children to ask questions, practice, and develop skills. i plan learning centers that promote childrens thinking and allow them to ask questions, take risks, and explore ideas. sometimes, the best way to offer these opportunities is to simply change the environment. i have seen a few of my own students and many of the children i work with perform better in an environment that is more relaxed, where students can explore, ask questions, and make mistakes.
another way to promote opportunities for children to ask questions is through the use of displays. i have a set of six signposts that i install in my classroom. each signpost has a different shape, size, and color. when children are learning english vocabulary, i have them explore my signs while i lead the way. once they have learned the signs and memorized their meanings, i ask them to place them in their own thinking space. i also ask them to change the signs by cutting or pasting them onto other shapes. this is an opportunity for students to continue to explore and question.
i have also found that i can use informal assessments with dlls to identify and clarify any misconceptions about mathematics. in this example, i use the pass the test concept as an informal assessment tool to ensure that dlls are aware of the appropriate number of items in a set. i observe dlls as they study to determine what they know and what they need to learn. i also observe as they play to determine whether they have developed the capacity to process new information. i then use these observations to discuss and reinforce specific mathematical concepts with individual students as needed. this practice not only helps me as a teacher, but also demonstrates to the children that i am committed to providing a comprehensive approach to their learning. d8a7b2ff72
i am fortunate that i work in an area of the country that has not been impacted by this legislation. however, i know that the intent of the bill was to close down the public school system for non-english speakers, and i am concerned about the impact that these “resurgent” attacks on public schools and their students will have on the learning and development of dll students. even with the legislation, teachers must still teach in english, which will make it more difficult for our non-english speaking dll students to learn english and succeed in our public school system.

i want my classroom to be a place of learning, safety, and kindness. the classroom must be a place where children feel welcome and feel safe. i want my students to be safe. safety is a learned concept, and i must reinforce safety with my students so that it becomes their own personal definition of safety. i must help children understand that they do not have to be afraid of themselves, of other children, of the environment, or of the world around them.
