I was reading about String concatenation method in java and there was an example which confused me.
Somewhere I found it said that String.format("%1$d", 20) and String.format("%1$1d", 20) are equivalent but
when I tried it, the answer came out to be false.
the method documentation states that
Concatenation of two or more strings is indicated by a single % sign and followed by the
total number of characters to add, including the terminating null character (decimal escape
sequence ' ').
I am really confused about what is meant by this. Does this mean that if the number of characters to be concatenated is not specified, then it should be dynamic and so String.format("%1$d", 20) is not equivalent to String.format("%1$1d", 20)?

The documentation is a bit misleading. %1$d means (given the argument value) "the value of the argument as a string, followed by the total number of characters to add, including the terminating null character".
So String.format("%1$d", 20) and String.format("%1$1d", 20) mean the same thing. You cannot make a mistake by using $1 instead of $d.
However String.format is not the only mechanism for formatting a string. You could use String.format("%s", value); or String.format("%0$d", value). In your case the first would be shorter, so it would be a matter of taste whether you would prefer using the first or the second.
In this example, you could also print the value as a string using String.valueOf(value); or System.out.printf("%d", value);.
