He also played for the Republic of Ireland at international level. He is the father of fellow Burnley player Andrew Ferguson. Club career Ferguson was an Ireland under-21 international. His father, Tom, was also an Irish international. He was a product of Arsenal's youth system and spent a brief period in the reserves, before dropping out of professional football. He was signed by the Scottish club Stranraer, but left without making a first-team appearance. He then played for a number of clubs including Dumbarton (for whom he played 10 times), Witton Albion and Tranmere Rovers in the English Football League, and Barry Town in the Northern Ireland Football League before returning to England to play for Burnley, where his son Andrew is a first-team player. He also had loan spells at Bradford City and Hereford United, and was capped three times for the Republic of Ireland, in 1990, 1994 and 1997. He later ran a goalkeeping coach academy at Bradford City. International career Ferguson was capped three times for Ireland. His first two appearances for the Republic came in 1990, when he played in friendly matches in England in the run-up to the World Cup in Italy. The first was in a 2–2 draw with England at Wembley on 26 May. Two months later, he made his international debut at Dalymount Park against Northern Ireland on 3 September. He came on as a substitute in the second half to replace Hennes Weisweiler after Brian Kerr had conceded a penalty for a foul on Sean Fallon. He was not selected for the 1990 World Cup squad. In the summer of 1994, Ferguson was recalled for a friendly against Sweden. He played in the second half and made one other appearance for Ireland, in a Euro 1996 qualifying match against Turkey in which he came on as a substitute. Both of the appearances were part of a run of 11 consecutive Ireland caps, a record that still stands. A semi-final exit in that competition would have earned him a place in the final tournament in England, but he wasn't called up. 81555fee3f1
