From Rooster Cogburns thick eyebrows to Nic Blaxleys wide, frantic smile, The Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie uniquely cast for Brando, the only way it could be. Wes Studi, Macaulay Culkin, Nicolas Cage and Wesley Snipes are all perfect as the thug brothers who become Josey Wales sidekicks, while Linda Hamilton is a reverently meticulous stoic as his beloved wife. And Brandos dream of being a movie star becomes a reality in this explosive Western. Smart, intense, brutal and morally ambiguous, the film keeps you guessing about its villains and heroes right up to its final moments.
John Carter is many things at once. One of the biggest mistakes of the production is that their original director, Andrew Stanton, didnt step away from the film right after a weeks worth of work and leave them to go work on Finding Nemo. Instead, Disney kept pulling him back for more and more scenes, and by the time it was released he had only a skeleton crew to make it all up to him. Unfortunately, he didnt realize his directorial duties made the movie worse, so when the film tanked at the box office, he made it his second priority to put some distance between himself and it in order to save his reputation. It was a smart, almost unheard of move, but as a stand-alone movie it was too awkward to be any good. As a companion piece to another excellent Disney movie that also used a musical-within-a-movie device - Mary Poppins - John Carter screwed things up enough for the opening chorus of Cats to come off looking like the most awkward song ever to the ears of a Disney fan. But fortunately, the song fits the movie, which is an amazing feat in and of itself. I dont care what anyone else says, John Carter is a truly glorious film. Its a war movie, a romance, a Western, a science fiction adventure, a fantasy, a coming of age story, a swashbuckling adventure, a great yarn, a fantastic love story - a fantastic movie all the way around. It reminded me a little of Lord of the Rings, except like LOTR, you know what youre going to get the second you sit down. I cant think of a more perfect movie. If youve only seen LOTR, you need to instantly seek out John Carter. And if youve already seen it, then you need to go watch it again. d8a7b2ff72
From a famous Swedish vampire movie of a few years ago come a parody of a recent Swedish hit, Let the Right One In and its even more disturbing remake, Let the Right One In 2. The original was both a supernatural classic and a vampire classic, so the sequel even more than a parody is an homage. Featuring the Swedish equivalent of horror/romantic lead couple, this year its gone for the extreme, castrating the male lead with the famous Polar Bear Cologne with the same general effect as the famous Yellow Submarine .
An old black comedy from Romania, theres not a lot to like about it, including the terrible casting. But thats not to say it doesnt have its champions. The year that the whole country seems to have rejected the governorship of Traian Basescu, its become a sort of classic. It was the only movie to have wide theatrical distribution that year, and has since been lauded a cult classic.
And from the strangest and most underrated of all the 2009 movies comes a simple documentary about an insane homeless man in Los Angeles, with some of the greatest comedic acting of its time. Its the most heart-warming film I have ever seen. And that is saying something. I guess I could do a little more kind of like this next year, after the one-two punch of I Love Dick and The Room.
One of the filmmakers, writer and editor behind Clerks, the world-changing comedy that spawned a million imitators, sits down to lunch with a friend. He casually mentions he feels the world is a bad place, and believes its going to hell in a handbasket. Things escalate quickly, but theres never a dull moment until the very end, where you realize one more move the writer has planned for you. It works just as it should, the movie saying, dont think for yourself. You dont have to. Look at me. Watch what I do. I will take over. A movie like this is such a welcome surprise that it makes even the most difficult movies enjoyable.
