Introduction

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a way to make sure your website gets noticed by search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo! It's an important part of any marketing plan because without traffic from people finding your site via search engines, there won't be many visitors to convert into customers anyway! In fact, 40% of all Internet users only use Google to find information online today according to Hubspot research . Luckily there are plenty of ways to optimize your content so that it ranks high in these searches—and this guide will give you everything you need to learn the basics of search engine optimization and how it can help your blog or website's traffic.

As we outlined above, Search engine optimization (SEO) is a way to make sure your website gets noticed by search engines.

So why is SEO important?

If you want your business to do well on the Internet, then making sure that people can find it when they’re searching for products or services like yours is essential.
Search engine optimization helps you to rank higher in search engines. It also helps you get more visitors to your website, which can lead to more customers and sales.

How To Improve Your Site’s SEO

There are 3 main categories of SEO, all of which are important for ranking highly on Google are on page SEO, off page SEO, and technical SEO.

On page SEO

On-page SEO is a set of techniques used to improve the quality of your website (as opposed to links elsewhere on the internet). In other words, t's everything you can do on your own website to make it more search engine friendly. Some things that impact on page SEO include:
  • Your content (i.e. blogs, marketing pages, etc)
  • Titles & description tags
  • Proper UX design practices to ensure low bounce rates
On-page SEO is one of seven ranking factors that are used by Google and other search engines. It makes up about 30% of the overall search engine ranking algorithm, which is a lot! So let’s dive a little more into the specific things you can do to improve your on-page SEO:
  1. Create Content With Your Target Keywords and Phrases: Keywords and phrases are a very important part of search engine optimization. You should always use relevant keywords and phrases when creating content, as this will help your page rank higher in search results. A good rule of thumb is using no more than 2% - 5% keyword density in any given piece of content; however, there are plenty of other factors involved with keyword implementation (such as backlinks), so don't worry too much about this rule if it doesn't feel right for your site!
  1. Don't keyword stuff your site. Keyword stuffing is when you use too many keywords that do not point at unique content. The result is that you lose about half your audience and end up writing for a small audience. If you find yourself writing articles or blog posts that are 5-10 pages long, it's best to limit the number of times you use these words (and variations) in your text so that they're not overused or spammy-looking.
  1. Use descriptive text in the links (image, internal/external/nofollow). The descriptive text you provide for your links can help search engines understand what a link is about. It's also useful for users who may be unfamiliar with the content of a page and need some guidance. This way, if someone clicks on "Google Analytics" from your home page and gets sent to an unexpected location, they'll know that this isn't actually Google Analytics!
  1. Make sure your hero title uses proper keyword phrases. This is where you should be providing a brief description of your site, including keyword phrases that are relevant to the content (e.g., “The best place for search engine optimization articles”). You can also use a keyword tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to see what keywords are being used to search for your content. Be sure to make this paragraph concise so as not to overwhelm users looking at your website's listing in search results.
  1. Avoid duplicate pages. It is okay to have a page for a single topic because this will help people find the content faster but don't mix together unrelated keywords on multiple pages. The result is that you lose about half your audience and end up writing for a small audience. The key to avoiding duplicate content is to use synonyms and long-tail keywords. You can use a thesaurus or other word tools to find these words, but if you have an idea where this phrase could be used on your site, try searching for it first and see what comes up. Then look through the results for ideas on how best to fit it into your content.
  1. Set up a custom domain and SEO meta tags. It’s critical to set up a custom domain if you’re using a website builder like Jemi. You should also set up custom SEO meta tags, which should be used to describe your site. Search engines use them as a way of identifying and ranking websites, so it's important that you include them in your site. Here are the best practices for meta tags:
      • Use unique and relevant keywords - I recommend using keywords that describe what your website is about, rather than just putting in random words that have nothing to do with what you're trying to rank for. For example, if you have a website about dogs, don't just write dog because it'll be much more useful if you wrote something like "dogs" or "dog training".
      • Be concise - Don't go overboard on trying to stuff too many keywords into each tag; this will look unnatural when viewed by people and search engines don't like it either! You can still include variations or synonyms of the same thing (like dog training vs dog behavior training) but try not to go over three different variations in one page alone unless they're all related somehow like the above example would be because otherwise they'll probably all get ignored by crawlers instead of being picked up individually as intended which means less exposure overall which is never good news no matter how hard we try our best at optimizing everything else correctly either way!
  1. Update Your Titles (H1,H2,H3). Titles are important for SEO. Use H1 tags for the most important pages on your site, and use H2 tags for the next most important pages. Use H3 tags for the least important pages on your site. Keep it simple and make sure to include keywords in them as well!
  1. Use descriptive text in the H1 tag. In SEO, the H1 tag is important because it's the most prominent element on a page. It's also one of the most read and used by both humans and search engines, so you want to make sure it's descriptive enough that it accurately describes what your page is about. If you're not sure what should go in your H1 tag, think about how someone would describe your website or landing page based on their knowledge of its subject matter. If all else fails, use this simple formula: "This website provides information about [topic]".

Off Page SEO

notion image
Off-page SEO refers to all SEO techniques and tactics that don’t involve updating or publishing content to your website. There are a couple of specific tactics that fall under off page SEO:
  • Backlinks – Link building is the most essential part of off page SEO. Create high quality backlinks to your site by linking to other sites that are relevant and helpful to your readers. This helps increase the authority and trustworthiness of your site, which in turn improves its rankings in search engines.
  • Social Media – Use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to promote yourself as a brand or company, but also use it for doing research on what people are talking about, sharing content from related websites and promoting yourself with hashtags that are relevant to your industry/niche.
  • Other Blogs & Websites – Guest blogging is one of my favorite ways of getting quality links and exposure on other websites in an ethical way (in my opinion). When writing articles for others you can include some information about yourself at the end such as an author bio section or link back to your website where appropriate.

Technical SEO

Lastly, technical SEO is also an important piece that plays into how high your website ranks on search engines. Technical SEO is all about how to optimize your website for search engines. That means making sure that the code for your site is clean, and that there are no errors on it. Finally, technical SEO also includes submitting your website to the search engines (this is called “submitting” versus “indexing”). And if you did everything right when developing your website, once it's submitted properly, it will eventually be indexed by Google!
When using website builders like Jemi, everything is handle for you on the technical SEO side.
