How to Build a Professional Website Resume to Stand out in Applications to Google, Amazon and more (2022)
Securing a job or internship at some of the world’s most prestigious companies has always been difficult. For instance, Google receives around 3 million applications per year and only hires around 20,000 people. That is a 0.67% acceptance rate!

So how do you differentiate your application from millions of competitive applicants?

The secret is creating your own personalized website resume. A website resume offers the creative freedom to market yourself and further elaborate on personal experiences, something a traditional resume, cover letter or Linkedin page lacks.

This article will guide you through a no-code, step by step process to creating your own professional website resume.

Step 1: Picking a website builder

For this guide, we will be using Jemi: a free, easy to use website builder with a large selection of templates to choose from. Signing up for Jemi is very simple as all you need is a working email address.

Step 2: Choosing your style and template

Ultimately, the style for your website resume should generally follow a minimalistic approach to maintain professionalism. The following are factors to account for when adopting minimalism to your website design.

Color Choice – When choosing your color palette, it is important to stick with two to three colors. For your background/base color, it is recommended to go with a neutral color (white, black or gray). For your accents/accompanying colors, it will be mainly down to personal preference, but there should be an emphasis to ensure that colors do not overpower your background. If you are struggling to conjure your color selection, Canva has a collection of color palettes you can take inspiration from here.
Clean Formatting – Clean formatting should revolve around having good spacing and consistency. In terms of space, do not overcrowd portions of the site with too much text or imagery. Good consistency is defined by having matching design elements (font size, headings, button styles, etc.) throughout your pages. Overwhelmed by formatting? Templates are a great way to have most of your formatting worries sorted from the very beginning.
While it is crucial to keep the above principles in mind, do not be afraid of experimenting and tapping into your creativity. Remember, this is an opportunity to show recruiters who you are!

Step 3: Creating the Home Page

Before we start, if not automatically done already, set the page to your home page by going into editor mode and locating the panel on the right, click on “Pages”, then “settings” and scroll down until you see the option to “Set as homepage”. Note, the ability to rename the page is right above the “Set as homepage” option. For this demonstration, I named my page “About Me”.

Making a good first impression is key, hence, your homepage has to be carefully curated. The first and uppermost section of this page should serve as a brief summary of yourself, including relevant items such as name, education, interests and skills. This can be done in jot note or sentence form. Next, choose a high quality picture of yourself to accompany the text. The image should only contain yourself and the background should not be too distracting. Adding a link containing your Linkedin page or email address is an optional step.

Moving on, the second half of the homepage should contain a deeper dive on what makes you unique: your personal interests/hobbies. Include a brief description of these interests and more importantly, incorporate relevant videos or photos. For instance, if you enjoy playing the guitar, maybe post a short clip of you playing a song. Take advantage of what traditional resume and cover letters cannot provide, the ability to share digital media.

Step 4: Creating your Experiences Page

To create a new page, go into editor mode and locate the panel on the right, click on “Pages” then “+New Page”. You will have the ability to also name your new page.

A web resume allows you to go into much more detail on your experiences compared to a resume or Linkedin page. Describe what you learned from your experiences, what you achieved and some of the projects you may have worked on. Do not be afraid to expand on certain details that you think are important. Like what we did with our interests, it is highly recommended that you incorporate photos or videos to back up your experiences. These are the items that will allow recruiters to get to know you better. For example, if one of your experiences is competing in Hackathons, maybe include a video of a project you demoed in the past.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have created your very own website resume! Remember, while there still needs to be a degree of professionalism, the beauty of the website resume lies in the fact that you can be as creative as you want with different media formats.
