Biomaterial-based platforms are needed for the development of functional cell-based devices with high throughput as well as "organ-on-chip" models for pre-clinical drug screening. Thus, there is a need for scalable platform systems that can be applied in all areas of biomedical research and the development of novel drugs and devices. Here, we describe the fabrication of a biocompatible, self-assembled platform based on gold nanoparticles that can be used for simple and fast-scale, "herb-oriented" fabrication of 2D nanostructured platforms. We show that the platform can be functionalized with different biomolecules, like natural polysaccharides and peptides, to be used in cell culture experiments. The self-assembled platform is obtained using a hydrothermal method, which allows for the use of low-cost, versatile, and functionalized nanoparticles. Using this platform, we show that the pluripotent stem cell lines can be cultured and the self-assembled platform is compatible with all stem cell lines, without compromising their self-renewal.
