nicholson's outstanding study provides a close and insightful analysis of the political and social context in which the plays were written and of the techniques and style that generated their pervasive influence on english theatre. the book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the emergence of the dramaturgy of the political play in the latter part of the seventeenth century, and to the wider question of the relationship of theatre to society. it is a welcome addition to the growing body of work on the political significance of the drama, and will be of great interest to students of theatre and drama, political history, and literature.
