The film finished its run with a total net collection of over Rs 40,000 crore, which included first-week collection of Rs 471 crore (net). Aankhen was declared a blockbuster with a total net collection of Rs 45,786 crore (gross). [10]
The film's soundtrack album, composed by Jaidev, has garnered high marks from critics and audiences alike, achieving Platinum certification. The film's soundtrack album, released in June 2002 by Zebronics was a double album release and got mixed reviews, with the first disc (stylised as 'Aankhen') being labeled a "marathon" and the other disc termed "mildly enjoyable" at best. The Jaidev album went on to become the best-selling Hindi film soundtrack album of the year (2001-2002) and is the 5th highest selling Bollywood soundtrack of all time in the US.[10]
Aankhen is the first Bollywood film to receive the cult status (or Kult Status as it is dubbed in India) from both critics and audience. It was India's number one distributor with domestic earnings of 500 crores. In addition, it also set the record for highest-grossing Hindi film in the UAE ($19million gross) followed by China ($15 million). This is despite Aankhen not having released in China. It's also the first Indian film to attact $10 million in the UAE to exchange for Indian money.[10]
On 14 December 2001, Saif Ali Khan made his acting debut through the film Aankhen. His character Girish Joshi is a corrupt government official who schemes to scam money from the government. He have a beautiful wife, Durga, played by Rhea Sharma, and three daughters named Anona, Alison and Anemone. His schemes are foiled by his adversaries. He attends a shooting party where Girish meets Anjali, played by Jacqueline Fernandez. They also fall in love, unsure how to approach the other, Girish asks Anjali to join him in his life and leave his job at the Public Works Department. Girish blackmails Anjali, threatening to run their family out of town if she doesn't agree to marry him. Anjali leaves home to join Girish. There, she changes her name to Anya, and Girish insists to have a child from her, to which Anjali consents. However, Girish discovers that Anjali is not aged 19, but 18 years old. An angry Girish tells her about his past, and she leaves angrily. Anjali travels to her home and meets her family, where they are informed that Girish is her father. She is overjoyed but disappointed in Girish. Aankhen was Saif's first Hindi film. The romantic track "Gudiya Guddiya" performed by Abhijit (Jaidev) and Preeti Desai became the most popular song of the year.[10] ed3faa56471
